Chapters 6 & 7

Fonts:

PostScript, also known as Type 1, were the main fonts in the earlier days. PostScript is made up of two components, bitmap component and printer component. The bitmap component was on screen and the printer component actually printed the PostScript font.  PostScript is limitedWe are all glad today we do not use it anymore!

True Type is different than PostScript because True Type does not have two components you work with.It is a fornat that uses both Apple computer and Microsoft which consists of a single file.

Open Type is defined as the best font type. Open Type fonts can be used on a Mac and PC with no special handling. They also have 65,000 glyphs, which is any distinct letterform, such as a number, a lowercase p, or an ampersand. The entirety font family can now be contained in one font.

When naming files, try to calm your imagination. Make it simple and easy to remember. File extensions are your applications. Some examples would be .html, .indd, .tif.

Helvetica and Times New Roman are True Type font but described as dfonts. Dfonts is a moniker derived from the fact that the fonts are data only. Dfonts will not work in OS 9 because they are not recognized.

Multiple Master fonts was unsuccessful. It tried to give the users the ability to create weights, angles, and widths of a single font. It is now just a phase.

Fonts are like software which means they have a license. Creating a font is difficult which is why it is illegal. The End User Agreements (EULA'S) says that you may send a copy of any font with your document as long as the provider has informed you their own license to use that font. No purchase, no printing.
