Chapter 9: Photoshop CS4 Production Tips

Photoshop is a fun software to work with when you want to fix pictures. Before you deal with a picture on Photoshop, one of the criteria you want to check is to make sure you know the scale factor and if it should be rotated. Scan the image to the correct size then scale the image in Photoshop. Also check to see that your scanning the image at the correct angle. With scaling you will achieve better results by performing the rotation in Photoshop rather than in a page-layout program.

The resolution for images should be 300 ppi.

It says you should be using RGB because it gives you more to work with. Once you convert an image to CMYK for printing, you may lose some flexibility. Keeping the image in RGB allows you to convert later in the workflow.

I would have to say working in Photoshop is great because you can do so much to an image. For example, adding layers. Using layers will help you in the long run so you are not confused. It is easy to erase what you do not want, but erasing can erase pixels in your image. Instead, you can create a selection using your favorite method. If you choose to not want anyone editing your image, then you would choose to flatten it. Layering, though, is going to be your best option. You are able to merge several layers.

Transparency adds effects to add visual interest to images. It could be a ghosted area or drop shadows. One thing you should know is that it is easy to transparent a photo in Photoshop and place it into InDesign or Illustrator. Transparency is used in percents. However, blending is much more complicated. When using a shadow effect in Photoshop, it is hard for that shadow to stay consistent in other software.

When creating a path, use make work path. It gives the path smoothness. There is also the pen tool. The pen tool is using the tool to trace around an object which can be difficult.

A duotone image is composed of two colors, black and a pantone color (spot color). It is a great way to ass visual interest. It's important to create them correctly by choosing the right amount of black and the right amount of the spot color. There are some colors that do not mix well with black. You must first start with a grayscale before applyinh duotone. Then you can add duotone by clicking the buttona nd choosing your spot color. Simple as that.
